The work kept starting over.
I spent most of my career on the provider side of technology, eventually leading North American organizations accountable for more than $500 million in annual revenue. Then I became a software executive, an operations partner inside private equity, and an advisor to companies making complex technology decisions.
The view changed. The problem didn't.
Finance had systems built around its decisions. So did sales and operations. Technology, one of the largest and most consequential parts of the business, still lived in contracts, invoices, spreadsheets, inboxes and people. Leadership was accountable for an estate it could not prove.
So every decision started by reconstructing the story. An assessment became a report. The project ended, the people who knew moved on, and the next renewal rebuilt the estate from scratch.
